Hi
My name is Judge Sandra L. Pomrenze and I'm running for Family Court Judge in Department P.
When you see that position on the ballot, it will be called District Judge, Family Division, Department P. And that is because all of the family court judges have the same powers and authority in family court matters as do the judges presiding over civil and criminal matters.
Family court judges, because of the role they take in resolving disputes involving families and children, can do a lot of good for the community, or not. Which means that you want your family court judges to have the abilities and the sensibilities as you would any judge, maybe more so.
That being said, since taking the District Court bench in January of 2005, I have been working hard to bring dignity, compassion, efficiency and the rule of law to the Family Division. It has been, and continues to be, an honor and a pleasure to serve in the Family Division of our District Court.
Prior to my election in November, 2004, I had been a practicing attorney with over 27 years of litigation experience and had been practicing law in Nevada for the previous 18 years.
I am an experienced mediator and arbitrator. Back in 1997, I was appointed by the Nevada Supreme Court to serve as a settlement judge in the Court's mediation program. As a settlement judge, I worked with the parties, and their attorneys, to resolve matters on appeal, including family disputes. I have brought these skills with me to the Family Division and have successfully resolved many disputes that would have otherwise lingered in the system, traumatizing children and their families.
I also served as a member of the Nevada State Bar disciplinary panel, evaluating whether the actions of a particular attorney involve ethical violations and merit disciplinary action. I have brought these high ethical standards with me to the family court bench.
For many years prior to my election, with only a short break, I served as a member of the board of trustees of the Southern Nevada Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), which is a non-profit medical education outreach agency.
Finally, and my greatest pride, I am the mother of a college student. I know that you can raise a good kid here in Southern Nevada, because I have one. And, as a single parent, I understand the unique challenges facing other single parents in our community.
What I have brought to the bench is good old-fashioned common sense, coupled with efficiency and compassion, and fairness.
One of the most traumatic experiences in a family, especially for children, is a marital dispute. The longer these cases stay in the family system, the longer that trauma continues. I believe that one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child is stability. With stability, a child has a better chance of developing a healthy self-esteem and a better chance of making the right choices in life. I cannot think of many things more unstable for a child than being in the middle of a marital dispute.
If you have ever spent any time in my court, you know that I regularly try to re-focus parents away from their anger toward each other and back where their attention should be ¿ on what they can do to ensure that their children have the best chance to become healthy, happy and productive adults. I regularly remind parents that they have an obligation to ensure that their problems with each other do not become the problems of their children.
I want to continue to do the good work that the voters elected me to do in November of 2004. I really appreciate any and all support and assistance you can provide.
Thanks for visiting my website.
Sandra
